• Each team will play 4 games and officiate 2 games each league night. Officiating includes 2 linespersons, one net official and at least one scorer to take care of the flip chart and recording the score on the clipboard)
• Games will be rally point to 25 points (do not have to win by 2) or until time runs out, whichever comes first.
• Teams must have a maximum of 4 male players and a minimum of 2 female players on the court at all times. If teams need a spare player they are welcome to ask any of the officiating team players but those players are under no obligation to play. If you’re short you will have to forfeit the game.
• Teams that do not meet the minimum player requirement will forfeit the game by a score of 25-15.
• Teams may play shorthanded of male players without penalty.
• Teams may borrow one player from the officiating team with the opposing teams consent but only in the regular season.
• Additional players not on the roster may not play during the playoffs without league consent.
• The server must rotates after 5 successful serves.
• Any type of serve is allowed.
• A net serve is in-play.
• Any type of serve reception is allowed, however the serve may not be blocked.
• Servers may step in one step over the base line on the serve due to the small size of the gyms.
• Spiking (including back-row hitting) is permitted.
• Refs will be expected to call the most common faults (lifts, double hits, directing, net contact, etc.) always erring on the side of safety.
• Contact with the net is not allowed.
• Teams must respect the referees’ decisions. They are not perfect and may call a re-serve if warranted.
• League balls provided must be used in games.
• Unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated and players may be removed from the court, session and even league at the discretion of the league convenor.
• Single Clock Timing - Games on both sides of the gym will be timed with a single timer started at the scheduled game times. The buzzer that sounds will signal the end of the games. If the horn sounds during the rally that current rally will be the final point of the set unless there is a tie game in which case one more point to determine the winner. If the buzzer sounds outside of play, one more serve is to be made and if the point from that rally results in a tie game, one additional serve is made.
• There are no Tie Games - A game that is tied when time expires will continue for one more play so that the tie will be broken
• Winning by Two - Due to time, games no longer must be won by two points and are capped at 25 points except where time expires in which case a game will be won by a single point.
• When playing with only 4 players only 2 of those players are eligible front-row players for hitting and blocking the ball.
• The winning team of the last game of the night is responsible for taking down the net and putting it, the poles and ball away appropriately.
• Teams cannot borrow a player from the teams who are officiating if it means that they will have more players than the other team.
• If one team is not ready to play when the game starts, the offical may award the waiting team 1 point for every 30s the team is not ready to play. We have limited time in the gym so games must start and end on time.
Playoff
Rules:
• The first-place team in the regular season gets a "bye" to the semi-finals. Standings are based on winning percentage. The tie-breaker is head-to-head record and then points +/- in those games and then +/- overall.
• The remaining 6 teams are matched up 2v7, 3v6 and 4v5 in the first round. Teams who lose in the first week are done for the season but are asked to help officiate the other games that night.
• Matches are best 2 out of 3 games to 25 (no cap/win by 2) with an entire time-limit of 47 minutes (with 1 minute between games).
• In the second and final week of playoffs (when playing full-court) teams may request up to two, 60s timeouts/game which will stop the clock momentarily.
• In the second round, the first-place team meets the lowest seed remaining - the other 2 teams play off.
• The final week of play sees the last 4 teams playing for 1st through 4th overall.
• Prizes are awarded for top three teams in the playoffs.
• Regular season rules for
game-play / officiating apply with the following exceptions: 1. Teams must use players that have played at least 4 weeks (not games) during the regular season (no exceptions). 2. Teams cannot borrow players from the officiating or other teams. 3. Teams must have a minimum of 4 players, at least two of which must be female.
• Officials will make final judgement calls and any questionable situations should just be re-played.
• Please help us end the season on a high-note! Never forget that we're here to have fun!
